In A New Country van Sifiso Khanyile uit 2020 reflecteert de filmmaker op de ontwikkelingen in zijn geboorteland, na dertig jaar democratie. Hoe ziet het land eruit, sinds het in 1994 na een lange strijd was verlost van het apartheidsregime. De situatie kort na de wisseling en de manier waarop werd omgegaan met het duistere verleden werd algemeen gezien als een politiek mirakel. Maar bijna dertig jaar later vieren ongelijkheid en uitsluiting nog altijd hoogtij. Met een open en wijde blik op de inwoners van de ‘regenboog-natie’ – waaronder arbeiders, politici, popcultuur-iconen, kunstenaars en academici – beziet Khanyile een roerige periode van vrijheid, vervreemding en voortdurend verzet.
In Sifiso Khanyile's A New Country, the filmmaker reflects on developments in his native country over thirty years of democracy and examines what has happened since the country’s long struggle against apartheid ended in triumph in 1994. The manner of the transition, and especially the way in which the nation’s dark past was dealt with, was widely considered a political miracle. But almost thirty years later, inequality and exclusion are still rampant. Taking an open and broad view of the citizens of the "rainbow nation”, Khanyile speaks with workers, politicians, pop culture icons, artists and academics as he surveys a turbulent period of freedom, alienation and constant resistance.

The State Against Mandela and Others, by Nicolas Champeaux en Gilles Porte - 106 minuten
Maar liefst 256 uur audio, in de vorm van langspeelplaten, werd een aantal jaar geleden gevonden. Het ging om de opnamen van het inmiddels legendarische Rivonia-proces tegen vertegenwoordigers van de Anti Apartheidsbeweging ANC in Zuid-Afrika, in 1963. Tegen deze mensen, waaronder Nelson Mandela, werd de doodsstraf geëist, maar het proces eindigde in levenslange verbanning naar Robbeneiland. De geluidsopnamen vormen de basis van de film, die het proces (waar geen beelden van zijn) tot leven brengt met animatie in zwartwit en interviews met overlevenden. Uiteraard is er plek voor Mandela’s onsterfelijke woorden tijdens zijn zes uur durende aanklacht tegen het regime: “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realized. But my Lord, if it need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
A remarkable innovative documentary based on an archive of 256 hours of audio recorded during the infamous 1963 Rivonia trial, at which Nelson Mandela and other key figures in South Africa's nascent anti-apartheid African National Congress movement were sentenced to lengthy jail terms. The prosecutors had sought the death penalty for the defendants, but they were instead sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. The trial was not filmed or photographed, so it must be painstakingly reconstructed using a mixture of archival audio, black-and-white animation, and interviews with survivors. The result is a uniquely emotive and accessible document of this seminal moment in South African history, and particularly of Mandela's immortal words during his six-hour indictment of the regime. “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities”, we hear him say. “It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realized. But my Lord, if it need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
