Het is bijna zover …
De 5e editie van de ZAM Nelson Mandela Lezing is er bijna: in het Internationaal Theater Amsterdam op zondag 16 februari! Kom luisteren naar een nietsontziende speech door de Keniaanse onderzoeksjournalist John-Allan Namu. Over de opkomst van een nieuw Afrikaans zelfbewustzijn, de schreeuw om verandering van opkomende, jonge protestbewegingen op het continent en de bouwstenen voor een nieuwe relatie tussen Afrika en Europa. Namu heeft een uitdagende en inspirerende visie op solidariteit en gelijkwaardigheid en een weg vooruit naar een remedie tegen haatzaaierij, uitsluiting en oorlogsgeweld. Het belooft een heel spannende lezing te worden!
Maar het zondagmiddag programma op 16 februari biedt nog veel meer: muziek, spoken word, publieksgesprekken, een expositie en veel waardevolle boeken, artikelen en films.

11 miljoen mensen op de vlucht. Huizen verwoest. Onderwijs stopgezet. Massamoord en verkrachting. Welke machten veroorzaken deze al 2 jaar durende vernietiging? Waarom sluit de internationale gemeenschap de ogen voor deze strijd in een van de grootste landen van Afrika? Het programma wordt geopend door Burgemeester Femke Halsema en gepresenteerd door documentairemaker Ikenna Azuike.

Het Gijsbrecht bordes is het kloppend hart van het evenement met een fijne verzameling boeken, kunst, artikelen, een kleine preview van het Framer Framed platform voor hedendaagse kunst en visuele cultuur van hun nieuwe expositie Past Disquiet, die op 27 februari a.s. opent. Daarnaast zijn The Black Archives en Athenaeum Boekhandel ook van de partij!
De kers op de taart is de expositie Strength & Resilience in the Western Cape van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf Gulshan Khan. Alleen voor deze speciale gelegenheid 1 dag te bezichtigen.

The 5th edition of the ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture is about to take place at the International Theatre Amsterdam on Sunday, 16 February! Come and listen to a thought-provoking speech by Kenyan investigative journalist John-Allan Namu who will address the rise of new African self-awareness, the demands for change from emerging young protest movements across the continent, and the crucial building blocks for a renewed relationship between Africa and Europe. Namu’s inspiring vision of solidarity and equality offers a path forward, providing a remedy against hate speech, exclusion, violence, and war. We look forward to an exciting and impactful lecture!

The programme will be opened by Mayor Femke Halsema, with documentary maker Ikenna Azuike as your host.

The icing on the cake is the exhibition Strength & Resilience in the Western Cape by South African photographer Gulshan Khan, on view for one day only to mark this special occasion.
