The third ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture was scheduled to take place this week, but due to COVID-19, we are unfortunately forced to skip a year. We do not feel that an online program is a suitable alternative. In addition to an inspiring speech and a rich cultural program, the ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture offers a space to come together, to embrace, talk and raise a glass. Be certain that we will do this again in the Spring of 2022, in collaboration with the International Theatre Amsterdam.
That said, we cannot imagine a year without the ideas of Nelson Mandela. They are more urgent than ever. His ability to bring people together in the struggle for equality and inclusion must be investigated and passed on. In the absence of the lecture, this we will continue to do in (online) events, in stories, with the production of a toolkit — a guide for activists for Mandela — and other activities. Our program is called #ImagineMandela.
The crucial question is: how do we apply Mandela’s ideals to our time, to our world? And what is your ideal?
Today we launch the program with the words Mandela spoke in 1964 to the judge who sentenced him to life imprisonment. This is the ideal he wanted to live for.
Following this, in a monthly video series, people from ZAM’s network will present their ideal, in anticipation of the 2022 Nelson Mandela Lecture. The first episode will be launched later this month.
You might be selected to feature in the final episode of the series!
